Often the way of enlightenment starts with disappointment. And plenty of us become disappointed with religion—its dogma, its rules, its inequality. The G-word is unbearable for some. And it’s perfectly understandable. So much blood has been spilled, and continues to be spilled, in the name of the God; not to mention the injustices to women and other marginalized parties in the name of God and religion.
It is a great misfortune that people have been so discouraged by the state of religion and the history of religion in this world—all of the violence that it has produced, corruption, misunderstanding and confusion. –from “The Pure Religion“
Connected to Source?
Being spiritual beings we seek the way of enlightenment, or something that allays this disappointment. We are by nature inclined toward that which connects us to our Source. We are wired for it. So when dogmatic religion disappoints, it is only natural to look further.
The fact is, all sentient beings everywhere are endowed with Knowledge, a permanent inner knowing that connects all us beings to that G-word. And since each of us is an individual expression of a Greater Reality, there are many religions needed as “there can never be a one-size-fits-all religion, for this will never work. And God understands this.”
A New Way
The way of enlightenment, as mentioned in another post, is the means, not the end. If you’ve read this far, chances are you are a seeker. Know that there are different kinds of religion: to take care of people, to organize society and to offer belief, which can lead us to the gate across which The Pure Religion is found. This is where God works through us, engaged here in this world. “Here God does not take you away from the world, but brings you into the world in an entirely new way.” (from The Pure Religion) Here we really can “practice in such a way that Buddha is born every moment of our daily life; in such a way that Jesus Christ is born every moment of our daily life.” (from Going Home, by Thich Naht Hahn)
This is why we are here.
